I used to give everything its own reverb. A plate on the vocal, a room on the drums, something long and expensive on the pads. Each one sounded great on its own. Together they sounded like six recordings stacked on top of each other.
Now there’s one reverb on a send and everything goes to it in different amounts. The vocal gets a little, the pads get a lot, the drums get almost none. It’s the same room every time, so the parts sound like they’re in a place instead of in a plugin.
The nice side effect is that the send level turns into a depth control. Turn it up and the part moves backwards. That’s one decision per track instead of a plugin’s worth of them, and it’s a decision I can actually hear.
I still reach for a second reverb now and then, usually when something needs to sound wrong on purpose. It’s the exception though, and I have to talk myself into it first.
