A project called Idea 47 will still be Idea 47 in a year. A project with a title has somewhere to go, even when the title’s wrong.
So I name things in the first hour now, off whatever the loop already sounds like. Most of those names don’t survive and it doesn’t matter. What the name does is settle arguments later. When a part is good but doesn’t belong, the title is what I check it against, and the answer is usually obvious.
The wrong names are useful in their own way too. Calling something the wrong thing for three weeks makes the right thing really clear when it finally turns up, because by then you know exactly what the track isn’t.
Only rule is that it has to be a proper title rather than a description. Slow Sad One tells me nothing I can’t already hear.
