Nearly every lyric I’ve kept was first typed with one thumb, standing up somewhere. Not because a phone is a good place to write. It’s just the only thing I’ve got on me when a line turns up.
The notes app has no formatting, no word count and nowhere to be clever. A line either survives being looked at on a small screen in bad light or it doesn’t. Plenty don’t, which is sort of the point.
The thing I’ve stopped doing is tidying them up later that evening. The tidy version is nearly always worse. Better grammar, less of whatever made me stop walking to type it.
One rule: nothing gets deleted. There’s a single note going back years, most of it unusable, and every so often a line from four years ago turns out to be the one a new track has been waiting for.
